What to Look for When Moving to a New Location
By:Mike Freemen
Moving to a new location, whether it is around the corner or across the country, can be a fun and exciting time, but it is important to find a quality moving company you can trust. Moving horror stories are all too common, but with a little bit of homework and shopping around you should be able to get your valuable items to their new location with nary a scratch.
When moving, the first step is to ask family members and friends who have moved for recommendations on moving companies. Those people who have recently completed moves of their own are often in the best position to give advice, and this kind of first hand advice on moving can be quite valuable when it is your turn to pull up stacks and head to a new location.
Even if you are not lucky enough to have this first hand moving experience you can still take advantage of the next best thing by carefully checking the references of any moving company you are considering. All moving companies should be willing to provide references, so be sure to ask them for information on past customers. After you have this list of referees be sure to follow up and ask those former customers what they liked, and did not like about the moving company. By following this strategy you should be able to find a moving company that is reliable and trustworthy.
After you have chosen the perfect moving company, it is important to review the contract carefully and to read the fine print. Be user that the moving contract clearly spells out what is to be moved and the dates. If you have any items of extraordinary value, such as artwork or collectibles, be sure that those items are covered by the moving company. In some cases you may need to take out special insurance to cover moving those very valuable items.
The same goes for moving business items. Whether you are in charge of moving for your office or you are moving items from a home office, there may be different rules that apply. Some business equipment must be moved using special equipment, and in some cases the equipment maker must move the equipment in order to keep the warranty intact. If you have business equipment to move, it is important to sort that all out before moving day arrives.
