By selling advertising space on this homepage, Alex caught the attention of the media and the free publicity he received made sure that his web site has attracted a huge amount of traffic, links from some very powerful web sites - and that obviously provides a spin-off for those who purchased the pixels.
There have been several copycat sites - all following the Milliondollarhomepage style. However, when you look around, there are a couple of sites which have been a little more innovative.
