How To Decide If Herbal Supplements Are Right For You
By:Gregg Hall
Today more and more people seem to be turning to natural or organic dietary supplements rather than using man made or synthetic. While there are some benefits to these herbal supplements, there are several things that people need to keep in mind before they join this growing fad.
First of all, if you are interested in using herbals, it is important for you to educate yourself. One thing you should know its there is a difference between drugs or medication and dietary supplements. The definition of a drug as set forth by the Food and Drug Administration is a chemical that can prevent illness, prolong life and treat other ailments that affect good health by chemically changed the way the body behaves. Though most herbal remedies claim to do this, they do not chemically alter anything in the body to cure disease.
Two good examples of this would be the paracetamol drugs used to reduce fevers. They change how the body functions during illness to bring down the body temperature. An iron supplement on the other hand may be given to increase the amount of iron in the body to treat mild anemia.
It is true that most modern drugs today did originate from organic means, either animal or plant, but they have been altered to isolate the one component needed to treat illness. Herbal remedies or supplements have not been changed from their natural state other than to turn them into a powder or gel. These and other dietary supplements are a combination of vitamins, minerals, herbs and other types of natural elements. Therefore, they should not be taken by themselves if a serious condition exists. Nor should they replace meals.
Also, keep in mind that there is some concern among health officials about the chemical altering affects some herbal supplements could have on the body. Since some of these could be life threatening, it is important for you to consult your physician before talking an herbal dietary supplement, especially if you have heart, liver or kidney problems. Always follow the directions on the label, or those directions given to you by your doctor. Never take more than what is suggested. And if any negative side effects develop, discontinue use of the supplement and call your doctor.
It can not be discounted that most of those who have tried herbal supplements have been more than pleased with the results. Just keep in mind that it is always best to consult your doctor, and do your own research, before adding anything to your daily diet. And never replace other medical treatments with these supplements.
