Is a Bombe Chest Right for your House?

By:Julien Raynal

A chest of drawers is a very common home furniture item. Each of us has used these chests of drawers at one time or another for storing clothes or storing files among other office items or any personal items. The term chest is normally used to refer to furniture containing one or more drawers for storing things like clothes, personal accessories, photos, jewels, or just about any thing. Generally a chest of drawers is a piece of furniture with three to six drawers that are large and a top drawer that is usually small in size and sometimes split to contain two smaller compartments.

As the saying goes old is gold. However many chests are available with new style, décor and fashion on the market, no chest is better than the old bombe chests; the much admired Bombay chests. These bombe chests come in various styles and finishes for you to choose from.

The bombe chests that are decorated with hand paintings undoubtedly enhance the beauty of any room. Normally bombe chests are gently curved and feature hand painted designs on the front, top, and sides of the chest. Bombe chests have drawers either of the same size or of different sizes. The beautiful handles attached to the drawers make them attractive and unique. Bombe chests normally have serpentine legs with beautiful carvings and sufficiently large drawers for storing belongings.

Generally, the bombe chests have little shallow drawers with ornate handles on the top portion. These shallow drawers are used for storing valuables such as jewels, earrings, chains, pearls, hair combs, pins, clips and other smaller personal accessory items. Although there are several varieties of chests on the market, old bombe chests not only give a classic look to a room but also add a unique touch of history and time. Some types of bombe chests are designed with the intention of storing multiple items while some are designed with the idea of storing exclusively clothing items.

Unlike the traditional bombe chests, the modern day chests are seen with rectangular base and short legs. For those with classic and traditional tastes, artisans replicate the style adopted in the old bombe chests.

Another advantage with bombe chests is that the chest can be placed anywhere in the house. They are easy to move around, and not tied to the wall or fitted to any specific room. Their look fits and blends well with the design of any room, whether in the living room for storing household articles, the bedroom for storaging clothes and personal accessories or the dining room to store cutlery items.

Even though we use the term “chest of drawers” and the term “dressers” interchangeably the term chest of drawers refers to those days when the furniture was handcrafted with due care and dedication. Thanks to the modern day woodworkers being well versed in the art of furniture making, we are still able to enjoy the beauty and comfort of the olden day Bombe chests.
