So we do wish the commissioner of baseball would come forward and announce that Pete’s punishment is over, with, of course, the politically correct reminder that if he bets again all bets are off. If the commissioner will at long last go to bat for the slugger, he may once again manage and, after a suitable period of bet-free behavior, gain his very well-earned place in The Baseball Hall of Fame.
