Bell & Howell 9-Band Shortwave Radio Review

By:LWN

This is a very compact pocket shortwave radio which receives nine bands and has entirely analog tuning. The bands include seven shortwave bands, AM/MW and an extended FM band. The extended FM band also receives American television channels 2-6 (or the Japanese FM band if you travel to Japan), in addition to regular FM stations. It runs on only 2 "AA" batteries and has a DC power jack. There is a small built-in speaker which produces somewhat tinny sound, but headphones can also be used. FM and especially AM reception is better than usual for a radio of this size. Shortwave reception isn't as good as that of most larger radios. It was possible to receive China Radio International, some unidentified stations broadcasting in foreign languages, and several domestic religious broadcasters. The frequency markings on the tuning dial are somewhat inaccurate for some of the bands. Other features include a small world map on the back and a sensitivity (DX/Local) switch. Overall, this is a good radio to purchase if you want a light, compact shortwave receiver which is easy to travel with, or if you want to try out shortwave radio without spending too much.
