Business - What is it?

The word "Business" Has many different meanings. The word business is yet another one of those lovely English words that is used for many different things. Many people already know all the different contexts the word business can be used in. If you asked those people to name them off the top of their head, they probably couldn’t think of them all. In this article I will define the most commonly used forums of the word. Lets get started!

These definitions of business are just general, and are by no means absolute or definite.

1.Enterprise

First lets talk about businesses. When most people hear the word they probably think of some sort of commercial entity or organization and a business establishment or cartel. Usually this type of business is used in phrases such as "running a business" or "starting a business". Simply speaking, a "business" is an organization that legally provides/sells advice, services, or products at a cost.

2.Commerce/Commercial Dealings/Patronage/Volume or Amount of Commercial Trade

The second must common use for the word business, I believe, is when referring to customers, traffic, and/or sales of a particular business (company). For example: "Wow, business really increased this quarter" or "We've had steady business since we opened". "Took her business to a trustworthy salesperson". "Business had fallen off." The English language allows us to say things like; "I wonder how much business that business has" or "my business is busy with business".

3.Personal Concern

Another use for the word business is to express personal concern for something or someone. For example; "That’s none of your business!” you could go, as far as to say something like “I am the boss my businesses business is my business."

4.Show Business - Entertainment Industry

We all have heard business used in this context before. "Show business" simply means entertainment industry. For example; "that’s how life is in show business" this phrase could easily be translated into "that’s how life is in the entertainment industry. Show business usually is referring to a particular part of the entertainment industry - Stage productions or anything having to do with a stage.

5.Profession/A specific Occupation or Pursuit

"What do you do?" - "Oh, I’m in business". When used in this context, the word business refers to ones job or profession. "The best designer in the business."

6.To Mean What One Says - "Congruity"

"I mean Business!" - I think this one is pretty self-explanatory.

7.Monkey Business

"No more monkey business!" The word business, when used in this context simply means horseplay, shenanigans, and/or foolishness.

8.Order of Business/An Affair or Matter/Serious Work or Endeavor

"I have business to take care of" or "lets get down to business" - business in this context just means the order or agenda of a business or individual. “We will proceed no further in this business” (Shakespeare). "Got right down to business".

As we can see, the word business is used in many different contexts and has multiple meanings. "Here in show business, we mean business, so lets stop the monkey business and get down to business." - "I mean business when I say; my businesses business is no bodies business but mine!" You can have all sorts of fun with this word because it can be used 3 or 4 times in the same sentence and make PERFECT sense!
