Nail Fungus Symptoms

By:Nicky Pilkington

The incidence of fungal infections throughout the United States has been increasing during recent years, and one of the most common of these infections are toenail fungus and fingernail fungus, conditions causing cosmetic problems and discomfort. The treatment is long lasting and the reoccurrence is high.

All these factors make it necessary for careful observation for any signs of nail fungus symptoms so the patient can visit a podiatrist, dermatologist or health care provider as soon as possible. The quicker a fungal infection is controlled the more chances you will have to clear it up sooner. In addition to this observance, the proper hygiene measures help to keep toenails and fingernails in good condition.

If you are suspecting nail fungus symptoms, check for any of these symptoms:

- Discomfort under the nail and surrounding area, sometimes accompanied by pain
- Change in nail color, ranging from natural discoloration to yellow, green or brownish.
- Pit marks in one or several nails
- Sudden thickening and flaking of the nail
- Progressive crumbling or splitting of the nail
- Unexpected, natural changes in the shape of nails
- Development of debris under the nail
- Separation or falling of the nail from the nail bed
- In some cases, nails may have a foul odor

Early detection can make the difference when it comes to treating this and any other kind of fungal infections. Visiting your health care provider, you can get a laboratory analysis if necessary, when signs or symptoms are not yet noticed. In fact, good foot and hand hygiene help reduce nail fungus symptoms.

Obviously, treatment and medication than just an aid it is the cure, relieving discomfort and pain associated with fungal infections. Natural anti-fungicides do help as well, and usually all of them are innocuous.

However, nail fungus symptoms may vary according to the type of fungi causing the infection, and the duration of the condition. Many people are suffering from nail fungus and do not realize the fact until discomfort or symptoms are in an advanced phase. This situation occurs more often with toenail fungus because people tend to ignore foot care.

The use of anti-fungicidal creams is a good way to prevent nail fungus or lessen the symptoms, in addition to medications. There in nothing more embarrassing that wearing flip-flops, sandals or going barefoot at the beach, and showing off a fungal infection that has thickened and yellowed your nails. A temporary solution is to apply polish or enamel to mask the problem briefly, until you can seek proper care.
