Essentials of Distance Learning Education and E-Learning

By:Ian Koch

What is distance learning education or e-learning? This is a question asked by many today as more and more people turn towards distance education and online learning. e-Learning can be described as an umbrella term, which describes learning done at a computer that is connected to the internet. Such learning or education allows the student to conduct his/her studies almost anytime and from anywhere without the need to physically attend a classroom.

e-Learning or distance learning education is very much similar to the traditional forms of education and can be just as rich and valuable as a classroom education, perhaps even more so. There are innumerable unique features of e-learning that help the student master new skills and knowledge.

Distance learning and now e-learning has been designed and refined over a number of years using established teaching principles. Today most colleges, universities ad organizations across the world offer a huge choice of e-learning programs to students that are fully accredited and accepted.

Is distance learning for me?
A question that bugs a lot of people yearning for more knowledge, the answer to it is really quite simple. Distance learning or e-learning is very much different from the traditional education we are used to and for many people it is the best way to learn. At the same time, certain students who excel in the traditional education programs can fare poorly online.

The reason behind this is the difference in learning styles. E-learning programs are best suited for those who are visually oriented, self-directed learners and love sophisticated and well planned programs. Lifestyle also plays a major role in the success of distance learners. Some of the common traits necessary to succeed in a distance e-learning program include:

• Self-Directed
• Motivated
• Comfortable with computers
• Able to use email, internet browser, word processor
• Like to read and write
• Inquisitive
• Disciplined
• Independent
• Able to stay on task

Every student looking to enroll in an e-learning program needs to ask these questions to himself/herself first:

• Are you self-directed and motivated?
• Are your technical skills adequate?
• Do you have strong reading skills?
• Does written communication come easily for you?
• Will you ask questions when you need to?
• Will you miss the social interaction?
• Do you have the discipline to study regularly?

Once you have found the answers to the above questions and prepped yourself with the proper motivation, you are all set to get started on your e-learning program.
